Expected Value

Meaning

The probability-weighted average of all net outcomes in a model.

Worked Example

A 40% chance of +$15 and a 60% chance of −$10 gives 0.4 × $15 − 0.6 × $10 = $0.

Common Mix-Up

Zero expected value does not mean every result is zero. Check the range of outcomes too.
