Variance

Meaning

A measure of how widely outcomes spread around their mean.

Worked Example

At a $10 stake, roulette red/black pays +$10 on a win; a single number pays +$350. They can share an expected loss while producing very different distributions.

Common Mix-Up

A higher chance of finishing ahead can coexist with a worse loss when a session goes badly.
